On November 4, 2014, the United Way of Clatsop County presented its seventh annual Iron Chef Goes Coastal event at the Seaside Convention Center. Guests were treated to the very best culinary offerings from the finest chefs in the area. And the main event was spectacular! It featured a live cooking competition between reigning 2013 winning chef Chris Holen of Baked Alaska, who was teamed up with Bridgewater Bistro chef, Geoff Gunn, against Chef Sean Whittaker of Astoria Coffeehouse & Bistro, who was paired with Jonathan Hoffman of the Chef’s Table.
The judges included state senator Betsy Johnson, US Bank’s Kevin LaCoste, Chef Tim McDonald of Food Services of America, 2011 Iron Chef America champion, Chef Vitaly Paley of Paley’s Place in Portland, and the top bidder for this year’s auctioned judge’s seat, Ryan Snyder.
The 2014 Iron Chef Goes Coastal’s emcee for the evening was Chef Scott Neuman of Oba Restaurante in Portland and Jon Olson of the television travel show, Next Stop. Chef Neuman also procured this year’s fabulous secret ingredient of fresh carrots!

Our local United Way’s biggest fundraiser of the year saw a huge increase in the generosity of the community. After expenses, all of the proceeds go to benefit the 13 local agencies that serve the most vulnerable members of our community. We want to thank all of our incredible sponsors, volunteers, participants, and all of the folks who came out to help make this year’s Iron Chef Goes Coastal such a great evening!
United Way of Clatsop County
Not for ourselves, but for our friends and neighbors in crisis.
People who have been self-reliant are suddenly finding themselves needing help to pay for heat and rent. Unemployment, hunger and homelessness are on the rise.
United Way’s Annual Campaign helps fund a strong network of social services to aid people in need. Our network of agencies is reporting record-breaking demand, so your help is needed now more than ever. The economic plight affecting so many hard-working families may not always be visible, but the impact is all too real in our schools and among our service providers.
If you are able to respond in any way, your help will make a critical difference. If you’ve already made a gift to United Way this year, please consider an additional one-time emergency gift. If you haven’t donated to United Way, please do so now. It may be the most important gift you give this season.
Please help us meet our 2014 campaign goal of $275,000. We greatly appreciate your support.
